Week 1 Semester 1 (9/4-9/7/12)

Welcome to 6th Grade Math!

We will be starting this year with an introductory algebra unit that we will be working on for the first quarter of the school year. The targets we will be working on can be seen on this page to the right. Students should be prepared to work hard and learn lots of new math. Please bring a calculator and a bound notebook (spiral notebook or composition book) to class during the first week. You will be recording daily notes and work in this notebook. Look forward to seeing you on the 4th!

 Field Guide--Final Product due 4/26/2012

• Written paragraphs, tables, and graphs completed
• Work time in class to finish written work and to complete work on the computer
• By Friday 4/20, finish typing and making table and graph on computer

Homework:

Homework for this week is to make sure you show the rubric and product description to your parents. If you have computer access, finish typing the 3 paragraphs and making the graphs and tables in Excel.

Introduction to Field Guide--Final Product due 4/26/2012

• Product Descriptions and Rubrics given to students. Please keep these in the math section of your notebooks.
• Collect data on tree circumferences, compute diameters to calculate tree ages.
• Begin producing tables and graphs and written summaries of tree age.

Homework:

Homework for this week is to make sure the data tables and written summary templates are all filled in by hand so that you are ready to begin producing tables, graphs, and written summaries on the computer next week. 

Trimester 3 Week 1 Multiplying Decimals (3/12 to 3/16)

In Class:

Decimal multiplication:
    a) Use ideas about place value to multiply decimals
    b) Use knowledge of fractions to multiply decimals
    c) Develop and use an algorithm to multiply decimals

Trimester 2 Week 11 and 12 (2/21/12 to 3/2/12)

In class:

• Dividing whole numbers by fractions, fractions by whole numbers, fractions by fractions, and mixed numbers by fractions using algorithms and models.
• Poster presentations of fraction division models

Homework:

• 2 photocopied pages: mixed practice on various types of fraction division

Trimester 2 Week 10 (2/13/12 to 2/17/12)

In class:

• Multiplying fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers using algorithms and models.
• Test on Wednesday 2/15 for periods 1, 7;  Test Thursday 2/16 for periods 2, 4, 8
• Friday--Begin Work with Fraction Division

Homework:

• Textbook: pages 102-103, problems 1-15 and page 104, problems 39-48

Trimester 2 Weeks 8-9 (1/30/12 to 2/10/12)

In class:

• Multiplying fractions using algorithms and models--What does it mean to multiply fractions?
• Multiplying fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers
• Estimation strategies for multiplying mixed numbers, fractions, and whole numbers
